THE BEATS OF KALAKUTA PT 3 (YELLOW) - djonathandavids'
January 09, 2012 08:38 AM PST
itunes pic

THE BEATS OF KALAKUTA Podcast series is a series where we concentrate on one of Fela Kuti's song and just make you dance, and not worry too much about the political or social commentary  that comes with it

Kalakuta Republic was the name musician and political activist Fela kuti gave to the communal compound that housed his family, band members, and recording studio. Located at 14 Agege Motor Road, Idi-Oro, Lagos, Nigeria. it had a free health clinic, and recording facility. Fela declared it independent from the Nigerian government.

The word "kalakuta" was a corruption of a prison cell named Calcutta that fela inhabited. The compound was burned to the ground on February 18, 1977 after an assault by a thousand armed soldiers.

This mix is inspired by Fela Kuti's "Yellow Fever" Album. It is one of his social commentary album. Commenting on the black people who are changing their skin color to look lighter. It is a song full of humor and stuff to think about. If you want the full story as told by Fela, download the full album on iTunes. Here @WWBeats we just wanna make dance.

This is a Remix of one of our past episode that was removed to make room for newer ones. We are bringing it back due to popular demand. We brought it back as a "SABARIKOLO MIX" Sabarikolo, as we explained in one of the past episode, is the drumbeats of local housewives in a small village in the western part of Nigeria, West-Africa, where djonathandavids spent almost ten years of his early years.  Their proficiency in beating those drums was beyond belief. We at WWBeats thank them for the gift of beats. This podcast is dedicated to all those women I knew back in the days on Okerena Street. On this episode we are gonna take a break from our usual "Fela talk" and talk about someone else. Someone that is very essential in the creation of Afrobeat. We gonna talk about Tony Allen.
He is the drummer and band leader of Fela Kuti’s  Africa 70 band from 1968 to 1979. Tony Allen was one of the primary co-founders of the genre of Afrobeat music. Fela once stated that, "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat." He is a self-taught drummer that became one of the best. We are talking about him today especially because of this episode. When you listen to it you will see what we meant.

September 12, 2011 06:27 AM PDT

This is the part II of our Afrodancebeat podcast series. Because we always draw our influence from Afrobeat king and creator, Fela Kuti (All Afrobeat Head does.), we like to give you a couple of facts about this enigma, phenomenon artist out of Africa.
This time we draw from "Expensive Shit". Expensive Shit is the title of his twelfth full-length album The title of the album refers to an incident in which the Nigerian police tried to arrest him by planting a joint on him. Kuti managed to swallow the joint, prompting police to bring him into custody and wait for him to produce the bowel movement. According to legend he managed to use another inmate's feces and was eventually released. In the song he described his bowel movement (Shit) as been expensive that Cops wanted it.
Fela is a man castigated for his philanderer lifestyle, despised for his marijuana-smoking habits, but yet connected to the masses through his lyrics. Many children, especially girls, ran and took refuge at his Kalakuta Republic where he reigned as DE-facto president. Parents hated him because they felt he was corrupting their children. It was because of this that made him married 27 of his dancers in 1979 in one fell swoop.
But here we just wanted to dance and make people dance with us. And we know the best way to make  people dance is to make Afrobeat meets House Music with a lot of percussion from West-Africa. So brothers and sisters, FEEL THE BEATS in:

Hi everyone, summer is drawing down, but here @WWBeats summer is 24/7/365 , we don't stop. But to y'all who think summer starts and end at a particular time of the year, this is for y'all. This is another Non-Stop "dance-road trip-backyard BBQ party-family friendly" Mashup Mix by djonathandavids'. You are gonna like this.
WorldWideBeats presents "dMIX Part 19 (OTTAWA MIX) - djonathandavids'
As usual in all our mixes you have the main featured act and the rest. In this mix the main act is "Plastic Dreams" by Jaydee. All you House heads out there remember this joint. But for those of you who don't. Here is a brief intro to this hit.
Plastic Dreams" is a 1992 song recorded by dance music producer Jaydee. It was the artist's debut single and remains generally considered to be one of the classics of the House Music. It was successful in Europe and also achieved great success in the U.S. The song, is an instrumental, features a prominent Hammond organ style synthesizer melody played in a jazzy, improvised manner. With some versions ten minutes long, the number is known for giving dancers a good aerobic workout.
In 1993, "Plastic Dreams" hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. The song continues to be remixed and re-released today by many artists.
Here @WWBeats this is our own Afrodancebeats version of this amazing song. Dancing around this track are: 1. Sexy Eyes (David's Epic Experience) - Whigfield, 2. Oye (Pablo Flores 12" Mix) - Gloria Estefan. 3. My Love (Ibiza Is Burning Mix) - Justin Timberlake, 4. Just a little while [Peter Rauhofer] - Janet Jackson
All the mashups and additional beats by djonathandavids'.
Enjoy the rest of your summer wherever you at in the northern hemisphere, and for our friends "Down Under" and the rest of southern hemisphere, the rest of winter.

THE BEATS OF LAGOS Part 10 (REVOLUTION 1.0) - djonathandavids'
August 12, 2011 08:05 AM PDT
itunes pic

Revolutions have occurred through human history and vary widely in terms of methods, duration, and motivating ideology. Their results include major changes in culture, economy, and socio-political institutions.
Here @WWBeats today we are paying homage to the modern day revolutionaries: South Africans, Tunisians and the Egyptians. And we are sending a loud and clear message to those who are still fighting in Libya and Syria that we are with them and they should keep on going. That as long as they don't stop they will get there.
As usual, today's podcast is a Mash-up of popular tunes that used to play on the street of Lagos back in the days, done to perfection djonathandavids'
Sonny Okosuns (January 1, 1947 – May 24, 2008) was a Nigeria musician. He was a revolutionary singer. In 1977 he released his song, "Fire in Soweto" where he highlighted the plight of south Africans under the apartheid regime. Following the success of that album his subsequent releases focuses on the oppress people all over the world, as in 1978 when he dropped "Power To The People".
In 1985 he released "Revolution II" featured in this Mash-up.
He deid on May 24, 2008 in Washington DC, may his soul rest in perfect peace. In our next Podcast "The Beats Of Lagos" Part 11 Revolution 2.0, we gonna do more of the music of this fascinating late freedom fighter, and see how his music is even more relevant to what is going on in the world today.
Enjoy.

15 Oct.1938 - 2 Aug.1997
R.I.P

For those who do not know Fela Kuti, we suggest you read our episode "dMIX (FELA KUTI ) Part 14 - djonathandavids'. But in the mean time and in between time, here is Fela's Brief background information.

Birth name Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti
Also known as Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Fela Ransome-Kuti or just Fela

Died 2 August 1997 (aged 58) in Nigeria

He was a vocalist a Saxophonist , keyboardist, trumpeter and a guitarist. Above all he was the creator of Afrobeat. The father of Seun and Femi Kuti.
R.I.P Fela.

IN THIS MIX

1. Alagbon Close - Fela Kuti
2. Opposite People - Fela Kuti
3. Shakara - Fela Kuti
4. Power Show - Fela Kuti
There no way any dj could do justice to Fela's music in a podcast. To get the full feel of Afrobeat: the Sax, the Trumpet the drums etc we suggest you pick up his album or download them on iTunes. This is just an introduction to Afrobeat.
d.

Over a decade after his death, vindication has come to Fela Kuti, Africa’s musical genius. AfroBeat, his gift to the world, is now an international staple on his own uncompromising terms, social content intact.
Throughout his life, Fela contended that AfroBeat was a modern form of danceable, African classical music with an urgent message for the planet’s denizens. Created out of a cross-breeding of Funk, Jazz, Salsa and Calypso with Juju, Highlife and African percussive patterns, it was to him a political weapon.

Like most Yoruba (Fela Kuti's tribe) from the western part of Nigeria, Fela Kuti has got several names. He was born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti. Then as you grow older you adjust to the one that suit you best. He was comfortable with Fela, which is the first name minus the prefix, "Olu". All Yoruba names comes with a prefix. But he was not comfortable with his last name "Ransome". Not African, so he dropped it for "Anikulapo". So He became Fela Anikulapo Kuti instead of Fela Ransome Kuti. Why are we talking about his name now, you may ask. Because everything that needed to be said about this phenomenal of an artist has been said.

What else would you like to know? For those of you once lived on planet Mars, let us briefly recap:

Fela Anikulapo Kuti: Over 77 albums, 27 wives, more than 200 court appearances. Harassed, beaten, tortured, jailed. Twice-born, creator of Afrobeat. Spiritualist. Pan-Africanist. Commune king (Kalakuta Republic). Composer, saxophonist, keyboardist, dancer. Was a candidate for the Nigerian presidency. I can go on, but for now let us just say there will never be another like him. This is the sensational story of Fela, one the greatest musician of the 20th century. undoubtedly, the greatest from Africa.

Notice, I said "Twice-Born" to describe him above. Fela believed he was first born in 1935 but soon died after his parent gave him a German name (he needed an African name). And was born second time in October 15 1938, this time his parent called Fela (an African name), and he stayed. He believed so much in the power of a name. Especially as an African and a musician. He said "If you are an African and especially if you work with music, which shares a link of common invisibility with the spirit world, you must have a spiritually meaningful, beneficial name. Without the correct name, Fela explained, “a child can’t really enter the world of the living.” You see, I guess that is why he died the first time.

You can now understand the frequent name change of his band. Started with "Highlife Rakers" to "Highlife Jazz Band" to "Koola Lobitos" to "Nigeria 70" to "Africa 70" to "Egypt 80". (Kind of remind me of Puff, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Diddy). Lol, digression, sorry guys.
Anyway, most importantly we are talking about his Ransome Kuti days here now because some of the songs in this mix all came from that era. He made them when he was known as Fela Ransome Kuti.
This is our first mixtape Podcast of Fela here @WWBeats and the 14th in our "dMIX" series. You wonder why it took us so long. Uhh, I guess we just wanna do something different. Stay tuned for more on this frequency, more Fela on the way.
d.

IN THIS MIX
1. Equalisation of Trouser & Pant - Fela Kuti (From his "Opposite People" Album
In this track sing about Trouser and Underwear. Saying even one is bigger than the other, they are both
equally important. Using that simple analogy to explain to the power that be that we are all important.

2. Mistake - Fela Kuti (From his "Zombie" Album)
In this Track Fela sing about "Mistake". Saying there are "Bad Mistakes" and "Good Mistakes". He says we
should avoid the bad and not be afraid of the good ones. Essentially encouraging us not to be afraid
of taking risk.

3. Water No Get Enemy - Fela Kuti (From the recently released "Na Poi")Album
In this track Fela sings the praise of "Water". How we need it in everything that we do and equating that with "Black Power". In an era
when other African musicians were sing in praise of the politician and the Rich. he praises the Water.
How can you not love him.

4. Eko Ile - Fela Kuti (From his "The '69 Los Angeles Sessions" Album)
In this track Fela Sing about Lagos ( "Eko" is the local name of Lagos). Eko Ile, simply means
"Hometown Lagos"

5. Monkey Banana - Fela Kuti (From the recently released "Na Poi")Album
In this track Fela disagree with one of the old saying, that "A fool at 40 is a fool forever". He
simply
said if you are a fool, you are a fool. regardless of the age.
Although music is a universal language, with this brief explanation of what he is singing about in "Pidgin or Broken English" we hope you find this podcast more enjoyable.
Enjoy it,
d.

Ps.
Ever wondered what "Na Poi" meant?.
Well, here is the breakdown;
"Na" in Pidgin English is "It is".

"Poi" is kind of Universal language. It is the sound that you hear when you are having sex. I could go on and explain it better, but i don't wanna, because if you don't know that sound, then you probably should not be reading this. Lol.

dMIX (OLDSKOOL CLUB MIXES) part 15 - djonathandavids'

Since the beginnings of recorded sound in the late 19th century, certain people have the ability to manipulate original song and make it sound different. And now with more advance technology it is more prevalence.
Modern remixing had its roots in the dance hall culture of late 60s and early 70s Jamaica. Local music mixers who deconstructed and rebuilt tracks to suit the tastes of their audience. Producers and engineers like Ruddy Redwood, King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry popularized stripped-down instrumental mixes (which they called "reggae versions"). At first they simply dropped the vocal tracks, and later more sophisticated effects were created: isolating and repeating hooks, and adding various effects like echo, reverberation and delay.
From the mid-1970s, DJs in early discotheques were performing similar tricks with disco songs (using loops and tape edits) to get dancers on the floor and keep them there. And since then we don't go to the club to hear the original song anymore.
With this our first ever "Club Mixes", we thought we get started with the two most Remixed artist on the planet, Madonna and Michael Jackson. And we threw in the mix, Beyonce, Ricky Martin, and Snap (one of the foremost and successful House group in history).

Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Dancehall owes its name to the Jamaican dance halls in which popular Jamaican recordings were played by local sound systems.
Initially dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, and dancehall (or "ragga") becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms.
This is our 2nd Dancehall Mix and Part 10 of our "dMIX" series. Enjoy it.

Here is introducing episode 1 of our new series of Afrobeat inspired Podcast, "THE BEATS OF KALAKUTA".

Kalakuta Republic was the name Fela Kuti gave to the communal compound that housed his family, band members, and recording studio. Fela declared it independent from the Nigerian government after he returned from the United States in 1970. The compound was burned to the ground on February 18, 1977 after an assault by a thousand armed soldiers.

This is a tribute to Fela Kuti, in our opinion, the the greatest artist out of Africa. This is the part one of the series, Enjoy it.
